 It’s Springtime in Texas! Bluebonnets and Indian Paintbrush abound right now. The state flower of Texas, the bluebonnet, is known for its ability to thrive in rocky earth and harsh conditions. In my recent novel, Rose is thrilled that her covertly submitted op-ed articles are published in the newspaper for which she is a typesetter. Needing new subjects for articles, she found inspiration in this lovely flower. Passing a small, unplanted triangle beside the Methodist church, Rose’s eyes caught on a spot of blue in the grass. And another. And a patch springing up in full sun. Ah, the bluebonnets grew wild wherever birds and breeze had cast their seeds. That brought an idea. Texans loved their bluebonnets in the spring. Could she write an article about the humble blue flower that resisted cultivation but grew where it chose? She bent to study the compound clusters on each stem, thinking how to describe the color of the flowerets and the way the white tip of each one attracted the eye. Upon close inspection, she found dark, star-like green leaves signaling something remarkable growing in this spot, unlike a single blade of grass or some other plant starting from two ordinary round leaves. From these stars sprouted the state flower of Texas, the promise of spring, and renewal of life. The article formed in her mind, and she made notes of the places in the neighborhood with the best displays. Bluebonnets. She would write about bluebonnets, and a smile would come to the lips of Texans. Button |
